As we brace ourselves for sweeping policy changes to education, I find myself reflecting on a guiding principle shared by one of my mentors: “Keep the main thing the main thing.” For us at CT3 the “main thing” is clear: providing a quality and equitable education for all children. It’s a simple principle that transcends politics, policies, and personalities. In the face of massive funding cuts and divisive educational policies, this principle is a call to action, a steadfast reminder of our collective responsibility to create educational experiences that inspire every child to become a global citizen.
To Educators: Focus on What You Can Control
Amid the uncertainty and change, remember that you have the unique power to shape the daily experiences of your students. So, in the days ahead, focus on what matters most:
- Build relationships with every student based on care and mutual respect
- Ensure that learning is meaningful by connecting lessons to their lives and aspirations
- Cultivate a sense of belonging so that your students and colleagues feel seen, heard, and valued.
These actions, though simple, are transformative. They remind us that even in the face of systemic changes, educators have the power to make a profound difference in the daily lives of children.
To School Leaders: Prioritize a sense of belonging
As a school leader, your role is pivotal in ensuring that your school is a place where all students and staff thrive. To achieve this:
- Value the lived experiences of every student and staff member. Celebrate diversity, honor individual stories, and create spaces where everyone, regardless of race, religion, ethnicity, gender, or sexuality, feels empowered to contribute.
- Prioritize educator wellness. Build monthly and quarterly opportunities for your staff to recharge and reflect. A thriving staff is essential to sustaining a thriving school community.
- Pursue academic excellence relentlessly. Ensure that every decision, policy, and practice is aligned with the goal of excellence for every student, every day.
There is no denying that change often brings uncertainty, and the demands placed on educators, are significant. Success will require resilience, collaboration, and a steadfast belief in the transformative power of public education. Every child in this country deserves an educational experience that not only equips them with knowledge, but also inspires them to dream, innovate, and lead on a global scale. Whether you are an educator, a school leader, or a community member, let’s all commit to keeping the main thing, the main thing.
